The harsh reality is that only 5 to 6 percent of plastic waste in America is actually recycled despite widespread consumer participation in recycling programs. When China stopped accepting American recyclable materials in 2018 it exposed major flaws in the entire US recycling system and its heavy foreign dependence. Much of what Americans carefully sort into recycling bins ends up being sent to landfills or incinerators due to contamination and lack of processing capacity. Glass recycling is more effective than plastic with approximately 31 percent of glass bottles and jars being successfully recycled into new products in America. Paper and cardboard recycling has a relatively good success rate of approximately 68 percent making it the most effectively recycled material in the country. Aluminum can recycling is quite successful with approximately 50 percent of cans being recycled and aluminum being infinitely recyclable without quality loss ever. The problem with plastic is that there are seven different types and most recycling facilities can only process types one and two effectively and economically. Wish cycling the practice of putting non recyclable items in recycling bins actually contaminates entire batches causing more waste to end up in landfills. The recycling industry needs massive investment in domestic processing facilities better sorting technology and standardized labeling to improve effectiveness significantly nationwide. Ultimately reducing consumption and choosing reusable products is more effective than relying on recycling to solve America’s enormous waste problem going forward.
