How Much Renewable Energy Does USA Use?

Renewable energy currently provides approximately 21 percent of total electricity generation in the United States showing significant growth over the past decade. Wind energy is the largest renewable source generating approximately 10 percent of US electricity with over 72000 wind turbines operating across 42 states. Solar energy has grown explosively providing approximately 4 percent of electricity with over 4 million solar installations on homes and businesses across America. Hydropower from dams generates approximately 6 percent of US electricity and has been the traditional backbone of American renewable energy for over a century. Biomass geothermal and other renewable sources contribute approximately 1 percent of electricity generation providing smaller but important additions to the clean energy mix. Texas leads the nation in wind energy production while California dominates in solar energy generation together driving America’s renewable energy transformation forward rapidly. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 invested 369 billion dollars in clean energy providing tax credits and incentives to accelerate renewable energy adoption nationwide. The Biden administration set a goal of achieving 80 percent clean electricity by 2030 and 100 percent carbon free electricity by 2035 ambitiously. Battery storage technology is advancing rapidly allowing renewable energy to be stored and used when the sun isn’t shining and wind isn’t blowing effectively. Despite progress fossil fuels still provide approximately 60 percent of US electricity meaning enormous additional investment and policy support is needed for complete transition.
